Key Advantages of Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers

The most widely used heat exchanger in the world that is proven across refineries, power plants, food & beverage, marine, and chemical processing industries.

Shell and tube heat exchangers are the industry standard for high pressure and high temperature applications. Their straightforward two-fluid design deliver what engineers need most: reliability, versatility, and value.

Here’s why they remain the top choice:

  • Handles the highest pressures and temperatures of any heat exchanger type.
  • Cost-effective compared to plate heat exchangers of equivalent duty.
  • Simple, robust design that is easy to maintain and service.
  • Tubes can be double-walled for added safety
  • Easy leak detection and tube isolation.
  • Less prone to fouling than plate heat exchangers.

FAQ: Shell and Tube HX

Two fluids flow through the unit simultaneously with one through the tubes, one around them inside the shell. Heat moves through the tube walls from the hotter fluid to the cooler fluid by conduction and convection. The two fluids never come into direct contact, making it indirect heat transfer that is ideal for hazardous, reactive, or high-value process fluids.

Our Cobrex double-wall design places two physical walls with an air gap between the process fluid and the potable water circuit. If a leak ever occurs, fluid drips safely out of the unit rather than mixing with the drinking water.

Corrugated tubing physically tumbles the fluid as it flows, eliminating stagnant layers against the tube wall. The result is significantly higher heat transfer efficiency and a self-scouring effect that resists mineral buildup — meaning better performance and longer service intervals.

Yes, our TW-Line (Titanium) is specifically designed for corrosive salt water and chlorine applications.

Yes, our P-Line is a sanitary U-tube design polished for high-purity pharmaceutical water.

It uses two tube walls with an air gap; if a leak occurs, the fluid escapes through a vent rather than mixing.

U-Tubes are better for steam or high-temp fluids because they handle thermal expansion without mechanical fatigue.
